Identifying a Yeast Infection - How You Can Tell For Sure

Note: There are many types of yeast infection, including balanitis, intertrigo, oral thrush etc. I will try to address the common types, mainly vaginal itching and oral thrush.
For visible areas, the very first sign of infection is itching and redness around the area of discomfort. These are the most common symptoms of yeast infection. However, these signs are also present in most types of skin infection or rash and are therefore not clear indicators of whether you have yeast infection.
To ensure that what you have is yeast infection, so that you can take the right course of action, I will go on to talk about the other symptoms of yeast infection that differ from area to area (e.g. candidal infections (otherwise known more commonly as yeast infections) in your oral cavity look different than if it occurs in the genitalia.)
One of the most common areas affected by candidiasis is the vagina and the vulva, the female genital areas. If infected in those areas, symptoms are very likely to be pronounced with severe itching. It is not uncommon to see burning inflamed vaginal lips and thick mouldy discharge. For some, a pungent vaginal odor may also be present.
Make sure however, that it is not bacterial vaginosis that you are infected with. Most of the time, an easy way to tell is the lack of irritation or pain. If you only experience pungent white vaginal discharge, it would do you good to check if it is bacterial vaginosis because candidiasis generally come with itchiness and irritation.
The second type of candidal infection I will be discussing is oral infection, also known as thrush to some. Three major risk groups are: newborn babies, diabetic patients and women undergoing fluctuations in hormonal levels.
Oral candidiasis can be identified rather easily as they look like thick white deposits inside the mouth. The infected area may also appear red and protruding due to inflammation. Do not try to scrape this areas as you may start bleeding.
Important thing to note is that mothers should not try to breastfeed their children if found that they are infected with thrush as this will "spread" and the mother is likely to also suffer from burning inflamed nipples.
Lastly, if you have never suffered from candidiasis before, I strongly advise a visit to the doctor before you attempt any yeast infection home remedy. The situation may be aggravated by applying methods suited for treating yeast infections on other diseases.
On the other hand, if you have ever suffered from yeast infection previously and recognise the symptoms, it should be rather safe to go ahead with home treatment. Usual home remedies I know of include ingestion of yoghurt or application of garlic on infected areas.
In conclusion, it is of utmost importance to identify your disease before treating it to ensure you are doing the right thing to solve the problem. If at all unsure, please please visit a doctor to confirm. Even though this may cost you, it is still the safest method. As for candidiasis, while it is rather simple to identify, you might want to visit a doctor as well before using any home remedies as you may be allergic or not receptive to certain products. Most importantly, be sure and be healthy.
